How to germinate turkey berry seeds for grafting with Brinjal ?
• Turkey berry seeds germinate well when it is sown in grow bags containing cocopeat .
• Fill the grow bags with wet cocopeat up to 3/4th of the depth.
• Now sow nearly 200 to 300 seeds in the grow bag.
• After sowing the seeds sprinkle the cocopeat again in to the grow bag to cover the seeds completely.
• Now sprinkle the water well on the cocopeat and cover it completely with transparent polythene cover.
• Now place the grow bag under a tree or keep it in a place where sunlight and shade comes consecutively in a day.
• At 5th day open the polythene cover and again sprinkle the water well and close the polythene cover again.
• The seeds germinate within 8 to 15 days . After 25 days of germination transplant those smaller seedlings in a smaller grow bags with single seedling per grow bag. After 45 days of transplanting you can use the seedlings for grafting (give nutrient if growth of the seedlings is low).
How to Graft Brinjal or Tomato plants on turkey berry seedlings ?
• Germinate the turkey berry seeds by following the above said procedure. The seeds germinate within 8 to 15 days.
• 25 days after the germination of turkey berry seeds sow the Brinjal / Tomato seeds on protrays containing cocopeat or use smaller grow covers. Sow one seed per cover. The seeds will germinate within 5 days.
• Grow the Turkey berry seedlings for 45 days and Brinjal / Tomato Seedlings for 30 days,
• Now cut the turkey berry seedling at 45 degree angle leaving 1 inch from the media. And also cut the brinjal / Tomato seedlings at the same 45 degree angle leaving 2 inch from the top of the seedling. ( water well the turkey berry seedlings and brinjal/tomato seedlings 1 hour before grafting)
• Now graft the Brinjal / Tomato Seedlings on the turkey berry seedlings using silicone grafting clips/ tubes. ( Insert one end of the grafting clip on the turkey berry stem and then insert the stem of the Brinjal / Tomato Seedlings into the other end of the grafting clip. while inserting the 45 degree angle cuts should be matched inside the grafting clip.
• After grafting place the grafted seedlings inside the card board box with top open and all other sides are closed.
• Now place the card board box under a tree or keep it in a place where sunlight and shade comes consecutively in a day.
• On the top cover the card board box with transparent polythene cover so that humidity will build inside the box and also light enters inside the box and it helps in healing of the plant.
•Do not disturb it for 7 days, after 7 days take the seedlings out and keep it under a tree or keep it in a place where sunlight and shade comes consecutively in a day and then slowly introduce the seedlings to the direct sunlight
•The seedlings will completely get healed in 15 days then you can transplant them in to a new big grow bag of 50X50X50 Cm size.
• You will get brinjal fruits after 60 to 70 days of transplantation, then what next enjoy the fruits by making more delicious curries.
• Grafted brinjal plants can give more yield, can survive up to 5 years and grow very healthier and also it shows good resistance to pest and diseases.
